NHL Stanley Cup 2025: Oilers' win over Stars sets up rematch against PanthersNew Foto - NHL Stanley Cup 2025: Oilers' win over Stars sets up rematch against Panthers

This year, the Stanley Cup Final will look familiar, as the Edmonton Oilers face off against the Florida Panthers for the second straight year. The 2024 Final rematch will begin Wednesday in what is likely to be another exciting series. Edmonton secured its 2025 Final appearance with a 6-3 win over the Dallas Stars on Thursday, icing a 4-1 series win and the Western Conference championship. The victory set up a rematch against Florida, which picked up its own 4-1 series win over the Carolina Hurricaneson Wednesday. As the Oilers chase their first Stanley Cup since 1990, their final obstacle will once again be the Panthers, whodefeated Edmonton in a thrilling series in 2024. Florida went up 3-0 in the series before Edmonton went on a run to force a Game 7; the Panthers staved off a historic collapse with a 2-1 victory over the Oilers to earn the franchise's first title. It's been more than 30 years since a Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup — and the Oilers, out for revenge, have extra motivation to break that drought. Edmonton will alsoopen the series as a slight betting favoriteover the Panthers. Hockey superstitions may also come into play here. After not touching the Clarence S. Campbell trophy last year and subsequently losing the Finals, Oilers captain Connor McDavid grabbed it right away this year — opening the hope that Edmonton's luck might change. Chris Sale becomes fastest pitcher to reach 2,500 strikeouts as Braves beat Phillies 9-3New Foto - Chris Sale becomes fastest pitcher to reach 2,500 strikeouts as Braves beat Phillies 9-3

Chris Sale became the fastest pitcher to reach 2,500 strikeouts, pitched six scoreless innings and the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-3 on Thursday night to split a doubleheader. The Phillies won the afternoon game 5-4. Sale (3-3) struck out Edmundo Sosa in the sixth inning for his eighth strikeout, to reach the milestone. He did it in 2,026 innings, surpassing the record of 2,107 2/3 set by Randy Johnson. Sale became the 40th pitcher in major league history to reach 2.500 strikeouts and joined Clayton Kershaw, Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer as the only active pitchers to have reached that plateau. Sosa was the last hitter Sale faced. He allowed just two hits in six shutout innings. Austin Riley had a double, a homer, and four RBIs, Ozzie Albies homered and drove in three, and Luke Williams had a pair of RBIs for the Braves, who snapped a three-game losing skid. Zack Wheeler (6-2) allowed six runs in 5 1/3 innings for the Phillies, who lost for just the second time in their last 13 games. BLUE JAYS 12, ATHLETICS 0 TORONTO (AP) — Ernie Clement homered and had five RBIs, Bo Bichette homered and drove in three runs, and Toronto used an eight-run second inning to rout the struggling Athletics. José Berríos (2-2) and two relievers combined on a four-hitter as the Blue Jays recorded their second straight shutout and fourth of the season. All four have come since May 20. The Athletics have lost three straight and 14 of 15, getting outscored 117-44 in that span. The A's have been outscored by 101 total runs this season. They've lost by 10 or more runs an MLB-worst seven times. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a two-run homer and George Springer added a solo shot for Toronto. Alejandro Kirk reached base four times, scored twice and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. The A's have allowed at least one home run in 11 consecutive games, giving up 25 total homers in that span. Athletics opponents have hit 84 home runs this season. Berríos struck out nine in six innings to win for the first time since April 7 at Boston. Athletics left-hander Jacob Lopez (0-3) allowed seven runs and six hits in 1 2/3 innings, his third straight losing start. RAYS 13, ASTROS 3 HOUSTON (AP) — Junior Caminero homered and drove in a career-high six RBIs to lead Tampa Bay to a win over Houston. NATIONALS 9, MARINERS 3, 10 INNINGS SEATTLE (AP) — Josh Bell hit a three-run homer in a seven-run 10th inning in Washington's victory over Seattle. The Nationals set a franchise record for runs in an extra inning. Rookie Daylen Lile got the outburst started against Collin Snider (1-1) with a sacrifice fly to deep right that came just a few feet shy of a home run. Luis Garcia Jr. doubled home a pair of runs before Bell hit eighth home run of the season and second in two days. For a good while, it appeared Nationals starter MacKenzie Gore would require little offensive support, considering MLB's strikeout leader racked up eight strikeouts across six shutout innings to up his season total to 101. Gore was buoyed, too, byJames Wood's two-RBI double to left field in the sixth inning, and was in line for the victory that instead went to Nationals reliever Jose A. Ferrer (2-2). But in the seventh, the Mariners drew back even. Leody Taveras and Ben Williamson had back-to-back RBI singles to tied it at 2.

Brunson, Towns come to rescue as Knicks stay alive: Game 5 winners and losersNew Foto - Brunson, Towns come to rescue as Knicks stay alive: Game 5 winners and losers

NEW YORK — TheNew York Knicks' season continues for at least one more game after a111-94 Game 5 victoryover theIndiana PacersThursday night at Madison Square Garden. Earning their first home win in the series, the Knicks head back to Indianapolis on Saturday night to try to force a Game 7 in theEastern Conference finalsand attempt to become the 14th team in NBA history to come back from a 3-1 best-of-seven series deficit. New York started out aggressively from the outset, with All-NBA performers Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns setting the tone, especially on the defensive end. Indiana is the first team in the series to score less than 100 points in a game, and the loss snapped their six-game road playoff winning streak. Here are the winners and losers from Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals between the Indiana Pacers andNew York Knicks: GAME 5 RECAP, HIGHLIGHTS:Knicks stave off elimination at The Garden The Clutch Player of the Year came up clutch again, scoring 16 points in the third quarter, capped by a four-point play for the Knicks, who led by as many as 22 points. Brunson, who hit four three-pointers, scored 32 points and also had five rebounds and five assists, using a variety of moves to get into the paint to score easy buckets. Towns, whoplayed with a bruised left knee, again bullied his way to the paint with 24 points (17 in the first half) and 13 rebounds as New York outscored Indiana 60-34 in the paint. Towns was big in the second quarter – after Brunson was held scoreless – with 12 points as the Knicks extended their lead. Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart scored 12 points each, and OG Anunoby had 11 in a balanced scoring effort. New York gave up 43 points to Indiana in the first quarter of Game 4, as the Pacers scored more than 130 points for the second time in the series. On Thursday, Indiana was held to 45 in the first half. Both teams were horrible from the 3-point line. Indiana shot 10-30 (33.3%), and the Knicks hit only eight of their 29 attempts (27.6%), but New York more than made up for it by dominating in the paint and never letting Indiana's fast-paced offense get out of the starting block. STARS AT THE GARDEN:Celebs watch Knicks' Game 5 win Pascal Siakam was the only Indiana starter who scored in double figures with 15 points, six rebounds and five assists. The Pacers starting five (Siakam, Aaron Nesmith, Myles Turner, Andrew Nembhard, Tyrese Haliburton) scored just 37 of the team's 94 points as Indiana shot 40.5% from the field. Haliburton, who had 32 points, 15 assists and 12 rebounds in Game 4, had only eight points (on 2 for-7 shooting) in 32 minutes as he was defended by Mikal Bridges for most of the contest. "Sometimes it's just a combination of him missing some shots he normally makes. I thought our guys were tied together and trying to make him work for everything," Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau said of Haliburton. That's what you have to do. You have to fight to win every possession." Haliburton only scored or assisted on 24% of the Pacers' 94 points in Game 5. In the series' first four games, he scored or assisted on 41% of the team's points. The one bright spot was Pacers reserve Bennedict Mathurin, who continued to produce, scoring a team high 23 points in 25 minutes after putting up 20 points in only 12 minutes of playing time in Game 4. In Game 4, it was the Knicks who played butterfingers with the ball, with 17 turnovers, leading to 20 Indiana points and 22 on the fastbreak. Live-ball turnovers have been the Achilles heel of both teams in the series, with both coaches, Thibodeau and Indiana's Rick Carlisle stressing the importance of not throwing the ball away. Game 5 was a complete reversal with the Pacers in the giving mood, turning the ball over 19 times, leading to 20 New York points. "We lost the rebound battle, we lost the turnover battle, we didn't shoot well," Carlisle said. "They had a lot to do with it, so give them credit, and we're going to have to play much better."
